We are proposing a continuous uninterrupted two-way bicycle lane along the entire duration of Grand Concourse from Manhattan to the great parks of the North Bronx. Along with excellent recreational and commuter value, this intervention will boost the sense of pride for residents and national image of the borough.
We envision the Grand Concourse as a great mingling space for the entire city, as a true multimodal transportation artery and a great world-class boulevard. We would like to see the Bronx’s return to fame as the city’s great recreational borough on one hand and as a national model for urban transportation on the other. Additionally, by providing a safe, uninterrupted public space within the boulevard, we are hoping to accommodate a showcase for the borough’s artistic expression, income-generating opportunities for food and recreational vendors, an outdoor reading space, and a safe place for the city’s kids to grow up and explore (imagine, as a child growing up in the inner city, discovering your surroundings for miles without ever having to cross a street!).
We would like to further incorporate the Bronx with the rest of the city by capitalizing on the generous infrastructure of the Grand Concourse in particular (street width, transit links, high population density) and of the borough in general (large green areas, commuter culture).
Most prominent features of our design are the wide bike path and rows of trees on both sides of the public zone surrounding it. Smaller moves include infrastructure of playgrounds and seating areas as well as support stations for human-powered vehicles (rentals, air pumps and storage racks), food stalls, vegetated water features, flower beds, and fountains. We also want to include numerous monuments and placards raising awareness of Bronx’s history and cultivating the sense of place, unique for each block and intersection.
